Lesvos (Mytilene or Mytilini) is the largest island in the North Aegean Sea and Greece’s third largest island, five nautical miles from the Turkish coast, at the opening of Adramyttinos Gulf.
Characterised as “the garden of the Aegean”, Lesvos is renowned for its rich flora including olive trees, various orchards and aromatic herbs, its vibrant ecosystems, its climate and its divergent landforms. No wonder why Lesvos has such a long history of olive oil production; archaeological finds have brought to light a Bronze Age olive press dated back to 2800 - 2000 BC!
An indigenous olive tree to Lesvos island is the “Kolovi” variety, or alternatively known as “Valanolia” or “Mytilinia”. A feature of “Kolovi” olive trees is that they grow on rocky terrains, up to an altitude of just under 2000 feet (600 meters). With its wide root system “Kolovi” enables the transfer of important nutrients and different flavors from the nearby herbs and trees from the soil to the olive fruit, offering an extra virgin olive oil of unique quality and taste.
